Dr. Amr Habib DDS
I come from a family of five where 4 of us are dentists and where education and personal development are valued. I have learned to appreciate hard work and the gratification that comes with it by watching my father, dentist and educator, thrive and achieve his dreams through dedication to perfection in his career. Having such a role model inspired me to pursue a career in dentistry.

I received my Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Oral Medicine at the Cairo University Faculty of Oral Medicine and Dental Surgery in 2005. I graduated Summa Cum Laude in the top 10 of my class. After graduating I did 1 year as a general practice resident in Cairo university hospitals. During that year I was exposed to all the aspects of general dentistry and comprehensive dental care. That year ignited my passion for prosthodontics. Due to my class rank, I was given the opportunity to join the faculty of Cairo University Dental School as junior faculty where I decided to join the department of Removable Prosthodontics which I maintained till 2008.

In 2008, I was accepted and matriculated in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry 2 years. postgraduate program at Eastman Institute of Oral Health at the University of Rochester New York. That enabled me to receive my licensure in the United States of America. I then continued my specialty training and certification in prosthodontics at Rutgers School of Dentistry 2015 – 2018. In 2018, I matriculated in a digital and implant dentistry fellowship in Rutgers school of dental medicine where I was able to work with digital dental technologies to improve the surgical and restorative outcomes for patients. In July 2019 I matriculated in the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to manage the dental and prosthetic needs of patients going through cancer. Through that period until July 2020.

FAQ

Questions
What is sleep apnea, and how can I tell if I might have it?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions can lead to poor sleep quality and a range of health issues. Common symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, and difficulty concentrating. If you suspect you have sleep apnea, it's important to get evaluated by a healthcare professional who may recommend a sleep study for a definitive diagnosis.

How do we diagnose sleep apnea?

We collaborate with sleep specialists to facilitate overnight sleep studies, which can be done at a sleep center or at home with a portable monitoring device. During these studies, a variety of factors such as breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and sleep stages are monitored to accurately diagnose sleep apnea and assess its severity. This comprehensive analysis helps us tailor effective treatment plans for each individual.

What treatment options do you offer for sleep apnea, and how do they work?

We offer several treatment options tailored to the severity and specific needs of our patients. One popular option is oral appliance therapy, which involves a custom-fitted device worn during sleep to keep the airway open. This alternative is suitable for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and can be a comfortable option for those who struggle with CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines. For those requiring or preferring alternative treatments, we offer guidance on lifestyle modifications and positional therapy, among other solutions.

How do oral appliances compare to CPAP machines?

Oral appliances are a less invasive option compared to CPAP machines and are often preferred by patients who find CPAP masks uncomfortable or disruptive to their sleep. While CPAP is typically more effective for severe cases of sleep apnea, oral appliances are an excellent choice for those with mild to moderate conditions. They are portable, silent, and easy to maintain. Our team works closely with patients to ensure the chosen treatment provides maximum comfort and efficacy.

Will my insurance cover the cost of sleep apnea treatments?

Insurance coverage for sleep apnea treatments can vary depending on your provider and specific plan. Many insurance plans cover sleep apnea diagnosis and treatment, including sleep studies and oral appliances. Our knowledgeable staff will help you navigate your insurance benefits, pre-authorizations, and any required documentation to ensure you receive the coverage you are entitled to.

How do I care for my oral appliance, and how often should I have it checked?

Proper care of your oral appliance is essential for its durability and effectiveness. You should clean the device daily using a toothbrush and mild soap or the cleaning solution recommended by our team. It should also be stored in a dry place when not in use. We recommend scheduling follow-up visits at least once or twice a year to assess the fit and function of your appliance, as well as to make any necessary adjustments.

What should I expect from patient care at NYC Sleep Apnea?

We are dedicated to providing personalized, compassionate care. Our team works to ensure you are informed and comfortable throughout every step of your diagnosis and treatment. From the initial consultation to follow-up care, our goal is to offer a supportive environment where your concerns are addressed, and your treatment is tailored to your specific needs for optimal sleep health and overall well-being.
